Thanksgiving!

The year is passing very quickly. This week we celebrated Thanksgiving with some of the family. Bob and Gina and the kids came up to spend Thanksgiving with us. Even the family that had other plans for Thanksgiving dinner stopped in to visit so it was a festive time at the Cole house.
Here is the dinner all ready for people to sit down and eat.

Bob and Gary stuffed the turkey early in the morning.
We had a pilgrim girl visiting us, little Miss Briget!
And her brother, the elegant Alexander:

Bridget had a knitting lesson and is seen in great concentration:

A good time was had by all!
next we look ahead to Christmas and the trip to Florida. Only Christmas shopping stands in the way.

Summer Fun

Twice this summer we have been visited by our youngest grandchildren and we want to share some of the fun and the photos.
Here they are - Bridget, Emily, and Alex. What a group they are when together. Their summer adventures included a trip to the camp and swimming in the lake.
Here they all are in the water and the sun.
Here we have Alex practicing his swimming skills.
That old paddle boat has given many rides on Portage Lake, going back to Matt and PJ using it as kids themselves. Here Bob is taking Bridget and Alex on tour.
Here we have Grammy getting a hug from the two girls.
The favorite book of the summer was "Where Oh Where is my Underwear", being read by Jessica.
This book was a favorite of Jessica's when she was their age.
The cousins had a good time and here we even have a picture of "kissing" cousins!
Grampy and Bob took Bridget and Alex for a hike up Haystack Mountain one fine summer day.

Here they pose at the top. What a view and what a hike!

Lots of fun was had riding scooters and playing outside.

There were quiet times inside, also. Here we have a very handsome Alex enjoying the iPad.
The summer activity culminated in the August Festival. Gary and Louise were King and Queen and Meghan was the royal driver.
Ryan marched with the Boy Scouts in the parade.
And the King and Queen rode in the parade in a beautiful car provided by Steve Marr.

It has been a wonderful summer and we have enjoyed the grandchildren so much.

Special Grandchildren

Today is a special day for our two oldest granddaughters.
Jessica Marie Cameron graduated today from the University of Maine Presque Isle. We are so proud of her for graduating magna cum laude. We attended her graduation and love seeing the smile on her face for a job very well done and pride in her accomplishments. She has future plans established to move on in her education next year at Husson to pursue her chosen field.  She has a bright future ahead of her.

Meghan Cole turned 18 today, while on a cruise with her parents in Bermuda. We found this lovely picture of her posted on Facebook, so we borrowed it. She will graduate from Washburn High School

in a few weeks and head off to college next fall at UMPI.  Meghan has a ton of personality and we are proud of her accomplishments.  She makes an impact in all she does. Where has the time gone?

As we reflect on our grandchildren we feel so fortunate to have these wonderful kids. Next on the list is Ryan Cole. He is excelling in Boy Scouts and is well on his way to the Eagle Scout rank. This summer he is going on a trip to the National Boy Scout Jamboree. Here we have a picture of him with his little cousin Alex.
Bridget Evelyn Cole is six years old going on twenty! So much energy and creativity keep her moving every  minute. She is so smart that it is an exciting experience to spend time with her.  She loves art and is very creative. Her curiosity has no bounds. Here we see her in Grampy's hat:
And modeling a sweater:
Emily Amelia is almost five and as cute as a child can be. That curly hair and curious nature make her a lot of fun. She is also very smart. She has a great interest in nature and picks up many scientific terms, such as nocturnal over a year ago. She loves books and outdoor adventures.
Here she is with Grampy.
This is an expression of pure joy as she went out for ice cream and the near-by farm!

Our youngest grandson is Alexander Robert Samuel Cole. He is nearly four. He loves trucks and has the largest fleet of vehicles anyone ever saw. He is such a cute, friendly, affectionate young man. He is a lot of fun to be around.
We will never forget his excitement as Farmer Steve drove in the yard with a real tractor and took him for a ride! However, we couldn't find any photos of that ride.

We love these children and feel so blessed that our family has grown to include them all. They are a wonderful group and great individuals. A couple of years ago they tye-dyed shirts for August fest and we did get them all in a group:

They have grown a lot since then! Here are a few more photos of them, being themselves.
And another photo from today at Jessica's graduation. Wonderful grandchildren, one of the best things in life!

Adventures in Charlottesville

Today was a wonderful day on our way back home. We stayed over a second night in Charlottesville, VA to see some of the sights. Actually we have found so many things here that we want to see that I am developing a list of places to go as we pass through over the next few years! Today we did our #1 choice - Thomas Jefferson's Monticello. It was a beautiful day here, in the 50s this morning and warming up into the sixties later in the day. The sun was shining and the trees are starting to bud, as well as daffodils and tulips are in blossom. We toured the inside of the house and found many changes since we were here once many years ago with the Boy Scouts. What a great piece of history and they are doing such a great job of promoting it.

Here is a side view of the house. They will not allow picture taking inside the house, so we did not get many photos. We did do the grounds, ate lunch at the cafeteria, and visited the gravesite.

After lunch we went on another adventure. You know how much Louise loves the Waltons. Well, we found out there is a Walton's Mountain Museum in Schuyler. With the address and the GPS we traveled over hills and hollows on back roads to find this place.
This building was the school that Earl Hamner, the author of the book that started The Waltons and of many of the TV shows, attended. The Walton house was his home as a child. They have filled this building with pictures and memoribilia as well as the actual contents of several rooms of the house. You can see John Boy's room, the kitchen, the living room, Godsey's store and even the recipe machine.
The house itself is down a hill from the museum. We did not tour it because the stuff in it is not original. This is truly in a far out middle-of-nowhere destination. There was only  one other couple there. The community seems to have set up this museum and it is not well advertised. No one would ever come across it unless they had a GPS and really searched for it. It was fun to see all the things they have collected there.
Here's a good picture of the Walton kitchen.
Here's the living room with the door and the stairs to the bedroom for the grandparents.
Here is a good view of Godsey's Store, and another one.
Finally we have John Boy's Room:
We had a great day. It is lovely here as spring is blooming all over the place. This is an area we will come back to visit again. Retired history teachers tend to go back to history - we still have the homes of James Madison and James Monroe to see, plus Woodrow Wilson's presidential library, the caverns, and an historical village on our list!

We did get our pictures taken with the statue of Thomas Jefferson today:
Tomorrow we head on to Pennsylvania. We dug out a jacket and sweat shirt today, and long pants for the first time in many weeks. Hopefully we will get through or past the next snow storm!

A Day with the Animals

Friday was spent visiting the Brevard Zoo.  It was a cool day, cold by Florida standards, so it seemed to be the ideal time to go there and enjoy all the walking in cool temperatures. We discovered that was not a good idea because many of the birds and animals were under cover or using heat lamps to stay warm. On top of that there was no school in Brevard County on Friday, so at least half of the kids who were out of school decided to go to the zoo! Even Disney brought in a couple of tour busses. So our quiet, leisurely tour of the zoo did not happen. However, it was a lovely day and we enjoyed being in the outdoors enjoying nature.
By far the most fun was the Meerkats. They are in a sandy area where they did huge holes, stand guard to watch out for anything threatening, and run and cavort like crazy. There were two babies there, and lots of fun watching them all act out.
Here's one of the babies with its mother.
Here is one of them acting as a lookout.
There were lots of large animals, like these zebras. They didn't seem to mind the cold.
The rhinos were out and about and rooting in the dirt and mud.
I don't know what the name of this bird is, but it was the ugliest thing we saw all day!
The most beautiful birds were the flamingos. They have just added a new flock of flamingos to the ones they had. Gorgeous birds!
Even the alligators seemed a bit sluggish in the cold. Once the sun came out in the afternoon things were a little livelier.
The aviary is always fun as birds fly around you and land on people. The birds seemed a little overfed as the huge crowd all wanted to feed them.
Here's Gary feeding a cockatoo with seeds on a stick.
This is the best picture of the day as this huge cat finds a bit of sunshine to rest in.
By far the most popular spot in the zoo is the feeding platform for the giraffes. There was a mother giraffe and two young that we caught a picture of feeding.
The biggest thrill in the zoo for a child is to feed the giraffes. They walk right up to the food and take it out of people's hands.
It was a good day at the zoo and we hope you enjoy the pictures of some of our adventures!
